Evolution

The founder of the law firm Kelly & Co., J. Joseph Kelly began practicing law in 1951 with the Toronto law firm of McDermott & McMahon. McDermott & McMahon was a general practice firm and the partners became the Honourable Mr. Justice McDermott of the then Supreme Court of Ontario and the Honourable Judge Frederick J. McMahon of the then County Court of the County of York. In 1953 J. Joseph Kelly was appointed City Solicitor for the City of Sudbury and continued in this capacity until 1956 when he joined the firm that became Bray, Schofield, Mackay & Kelly in Kitchener, Ontario.

During his tenure with the firm of Bray, Schofield, Mackay & Kelly, J. Joseph Kelly's practice consisted largely of administrative law and as counsel and solicitor for The Corporation of the City of Kitchener until 1968 when The Corporation of the City of Kitchener formed its Legal Department. During this time with the Bray firm J. Joseph Kelly was also counsel and solicitor for The Waterloo County Board of Education.

In 1971 J. Joseph Kelly withdrew from the partnership of Bray, Schofield, Mackay & Kelly and subsequently formed the firm Kelly & Morley. J. Joseph Kelly continued to practice civil and criminal litigation and continued as counsel for The Waterloo County Board of Education. In 1995 Kelly & Co. came into existence with practice emphasis on the general practice of law including serving the corporate and commercial needs of clientele and offering the specialty of criminal and civil litigation as well as appellate representation. The firm has diligently represented clients and appeared at all levels of the Canadian judicial structure, including, but not limited to, the Supreme Court of Canada, the Federal Court of Canada, the Ontario Court of Appeal, Ontario Court (General Division), Ontario Court (Provincial Division), the Ontario Municipal Board, the Workers' Compensation Board, Liquor License Board of Ontario and various municipal level committees. The firm represents clients from Windsor to Ottawa to Thunder Bay, Ontario, and all points in between. The firm also has a variety of United States and internationally based clients.
